Baffling take: IIT Mandi director claims eating of meat causing landslides in Himach
Shimla, Sep 8 : Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, Director Laxmidhar Behera has kicked up a controversy by blaming meat eaters for the large-scale landslides and cloud-bursts the state has experienced this monsoon.
In a purported speech, that has gone viral, Behera is heard claiming there is a symbiotic relationship between butchering of animals and environmental degradation.
The IIT, Mandi, Director also apparently asked the students to take a pledge together that they won’t consume meat.
“So To become good human beings What you have to do ??? (say) no to meat eating, speak together (aik sath bolo) sounds not coming What ( awaaj nehi aa raha kaya nehi pura dang sai bolo ) ….. yes Himachal Pradesh will have a significant downfall if innocent animals are not … You are butchering them that has symbiotic relationship with the degradadation of environment as well. You can’t see now but it will have. It is having large-scale landslide other things, cloudburst, that you see again and again, that is due to these large scale cruelty,” he said in the purported video, that has gone viral.
UNI has neither ascertained the authenticity of the video, nor is it in a position to do so.
The speech was made at a time when a joint team of IIT Roorkee and IIT Mandi was studying the reasons for the recent rain havoc and recommending to the state and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) ways and means of solving the serious problem. A separate team of GSI and IIT Mandi scientists are studying the cracks that have appeared in many hills less prone to landslides.
