Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has again worn the Anna cap and was at the Ramlila Maidan. This time not anti-corruption but to garner support against the Centre’s ordinance against his power.
With the same old ‘Anna’ cap on Kejriwal was back at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi for a ‘mega’ rally organised by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against an Ordinance brought in by the central government which grants control over aspects of Delhi’s governance to the Lieutenant Governor (LG), appointed by the Centre.
The Ordinance, brought in on 19 May, designated the LG as the administrator of Delhi, who will have the final say on the postings and transfer of all bureaucrats serving in the Delhi government.
What is significant that the Centre went ahead with the ordinance despite a week back the Supreme Court held that the legislature or the elected government of Delhi has control over bureaucrats in administration of services.
The 11 June rally was, in a way, a culmination of month-long efforts by party supremo and Delhi Chief Minister (CM) Arvind Kejriwal who, during this time, met Opposition leaders and asked them for support over the issue. These leaders include West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao, and Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray.
“Modi is saying that he does not believe or follow the orders of the Supreme Court. For the first time in 75 years since our Independence, we have a Prime Minister who says that he is not going to listen to the orders of the Supreme Court,” Kejriwal said at the rally.
