Odisha: Rejingtal village converts into a tribal Saura art gallery

Bhubaneswar, Oct 2 : Saura artists in Rejingtal village in Odisha’s Rayagada district have joined Saura mural painting camp in the village to promote and glorify Saura tribal art work in front of their own houses.

The Odisha Lalitkala Academy in association with Odia Language Literature and Culture department of Odisha government with support of Rayagada District Administration, for the first time organised this Saura mural painting camp in the village to promote this art form.

More than 50 Saura artists joined in this camp to glorify their Saura tribal art work in front of their own houses.

The camp for Tribal Art Culture was based on Saura Mural Painting (Idtal) which began on September 28 and continued for 5 days.

Odisha Lalitkala Academy President Sudarshan Patnaik said the academy had organized the Saura mural painting camp in the village to promote this art form.

In 2021 the academy also organised a similar kind of model painting camp on Pattachitra at Raghurajpur village in Puri district.
It is believed that the Saura moral painting tradition has been followed since the ancestral period by the Lanjia Saura community who are a part of Odisha Tribal society.

This art is done by the community to show respect and gratitude for their deities, forefathers and also for the well beings of their village.

The Saura paintings flaunt the images of village agriculture, haunting, harvesting, hills and mountains, Tribal life-style, their marriage and dance, worshipping of their deities made up of mud, different birds, animals and insects.
At the closing ceremony on Monday, the Odisha Lalit Kala Academy felicitated all the artists who participated in the camp to encourage their hidden artistic talent.
