Mahesh Bhatt was born on September 20, 1948, in Mumbai. His father, Nanabhai Bhatt, was a well-known filmmaker in the film industry.
Due to the filmy atmosphere at home, he also got inclined towards films and started dreaming of becoming a director.
After completing his studies, he started working as an assistant to producer-director Raj Khosla.

After this, he directed many films like ‘Manjile Aur Bhi Hain’, ‘Vishwasghat’, ‘Lahu Ke Do Rang’, ‘Naya Daur’, and ‘Abhimanyu’ as a director, but these films did not benefit him much.
In the year 1982, Mahesh Bhatt got the opportunity to direct the film ‘Arth’.
The film starred Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in the lead roles.
It is believed that through this film, Mahesh Bhatt showed his relationship with actress Parveen Babi.

Although almost all the songs in this film proved to be superhits, the song ‘Chitthi aayi hai watan se chitthi aayi hai’ in the velvety voice of Pankaj Udhas still moistens the eyes of the listeners.
The years 1986–1989 proved to be a bad time for Mahesh Bhatt’s film career.
During this time, films like ‘Aaj’, ‘Kaash’, ‘Thikana’, and ‘Kabza’ were released, but all these films were badly rejected at the ticket window.
In 1989, Mahesh Bhatt ventured into film production with his brother Mukesh Bhatt and produced Daddy under the banner of Vishesh Films.
