Cyclonic Storm Asani: Andaman Suspends All Tourism Activities
Port Blair, March 18: In the wake of warning issued by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) about the formation of low pressure area over South East Bay of Bengal and its likely intensification into a cyclonic storm, all tourism activities in A&N Islands have been suspended from March 19 to 22, 2022.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to put all Disaster Management Machineries and Officials on high alert and declare 19 and 21 March 2022 as holidays for all schools and colleges.
In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor, the Member of Parliament mentioned that according to IMD report and reports published by various national and international media the cyclonic storm (if formed) will be powerful enough to cause serious damages and hence he has requested the Lt. Governor to put all the Disaster management Machineries and Officials on high alert and declare 19 and 21 March 2022 as holidays for all schools and colleges, considering the safety of children. In this regard, he has also requested the Lt. Governor to send a sufficient number of officials to all remote Islands so that in case of any kind of eventuality due to the cyclonic storm (if formed) can be managed professionally. He has also requested the Lt.
Governor to caution the general public regarding present weather conditions and provide general public hourly updates and information through all print, electronic and social media units. Meanwhile, as per latest IMD alert issued on Friday morning, the low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal moved east northeast wards and lay cents at 0830 hours IST today over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Seas & east Equatorial Indian Ocean.
As per IMD it is likely to continue to move east-northeast wards, become a well marked low pressure area and lie over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South. Andaman Sea on 19th March morning. Thereafter it is likely to move nearly northwards also get and off Andaman and Nicobar Islands, intensify into a depression by morning of 20th March and into a cyclonic storm on 21 March. Thereafter, it is likely to move nearly North-Northeast wards and reach near Bangladesh and Myanmar coast around morning in 22 March 2022.
