Scores of girls from different schools in the district assembled at the Bishop Mondal Inter College at around 9 am for the marathon. Some estimated the crowd at around 10,000.
Though permission for the marathon was taken from the administration, the number of participants was not mentioned in the application.
As the run began, some 30 in the middle section fell down even as other students continued to run past them. Congress activists quickly reached the spot and began picking up those on the ground. The injured were sent to a hospital.
Former Bareilly Mayor Supriya Aron termed it a conspiracy against the Congress. But she apologized for the incident.
