Feels Surreal: Swiatek On Becoming World No.1
Miami, March 26: Women’s tennis has a new world No.1, with Iga Swiatek becoming the first Polish player to sit atop on singles’ rankings chart. The 20-year-old Swiatek will take over the pole position from retired Ashleigh Barty, who had asked to vacate her No.1 spot.
“I’m pretty sure that tomorrow the sun will shine exactly the same way as today but for now…it feels surreal. No.1!!” tweeted Swiatek. Swiatek achieved the milestone after clinching a Friday night win over Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 6-2, 6-0 in the second round of the Miami Open.
When the tournament ends and rankings are updated on April 4, Barty’s name will be officially removed and Swiatek will hold the distinction. The Polish player will become the 28th woman to claim singles’ No.1 spot. Swiatek had become the first player from Poland to win a Grand Slam singles title, having lifted the 2020 Roland-Garros trophy. UNI
