Djokovic Withdraws From US Tournaments

Belgrade (Serbia), March 10: Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open, citing regulations by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the reason for his inability to participate in the Masters 1000-level events.

“While I was automatically listed in the @BNPPARIBASOPEN and @MiamiOpen draw I knew it would be unlikely I’d be able to travel,” Djokovic tweeted in the early hours of Thursday. “The CDC has confirmed that regulations won’t be changing so I won’t be able to play in the US. Good luck to those playing in these great tournaments.”

Djokovic in an Instagram story further said, “But as international Covid regulations are always being amended, I wanted to wait to see if anything would change”.

Earlier in January, Djokovic was deported from Australia after a 10-day legal battle against the Down Under government to defend his title at the Australian Open. Spaniard Rafael Nadal defeated Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the 2022 edition final to lift his 21st major singles trophy, surpassing the all-time record he had jointly held with Djokovic and Swiss Roger Federer.
