Sindhu Clinches Syed Modi Title

Lucknow, Jan 23 : Former world champion PV Sindhu clinched women’s singles title at the Syed Modi International Super 100 tournament here on Sunday. Sindhu defeated her younger compatriot Malvika Bansod 21-13, 21-16 in a match that lasted for 35 minutes. In the first game, Sindhu got early lead and head onto breather with 11-1 in five minutes and quickly took opening game 21-13 in 15 minutes. After the change of sides, the former world champion continued her domination in the proceedings of the game and took 11-4 lead.
Malvika did manage to earn four points in a row but it was Sindhu who had control of the match, as she held 16-8 lead. The youngster kept her cool and reduced the gap to 12-17. But, Sindhu raced to the match point despite committing error and wrapped up the match 21-16. This was Sindhu’s second Syed Modi title win, having won the Super 100 tournament in 2017 after beating Gregoria Mariska in the final.
In another match, the duo of Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto defeated the fellow Indian pair of T H Nagendra Babu and Srivedya Gurazada 21-16, 21-12 to win the mixed doubles title. The men’s singles final, however, was called off after one the finalists tested positive for Covid-19 and his opponent was deemed as the close.
