UK Tells Russia Route To Lifting Sanctions
London, March 27 : UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on Sunday said the sanctions on Russia would end only after its withdrawal from Ukraine. In an interview with Sunday Telegraph, Truss said that Moscow would also have to commit to “no further aggression” or face the prospect of them being reimposed. She further said that the West need to remain “tough to get peace”. According to BBC, the UK, US, and EU have so far imposed sanctions on over 1,000 Russian individuals and businesses. The Foreign Secretary said that a negotiations unit had been set up to held Ukraine if Russia gets “serious” about negotiations. “I don’t believe they are serious at present. That’s why… we need to double down on sanctions,” she pointed out. She said that more should have been done against Russian President Vladimir Putin following his annexation of Crimea in 2014. “There needs to be hard levers. Of course, sanctions are a hard lever. Those sanctions should only come off with a full ceasefire and withdrawal, but also commitments that there will be no further aggression,” she said. Her comments are similar to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s statement that the the sanctions on Russia were “not designed to be permanent”.
