Russia Steps Up Assaults On Key Ukrainian Cities
Kiev, March 1: Russia on Tuesday intensified its assaults in key parts of Ukraine after a massive convoy of Russian armored vehicles moved toward the capital, Kyiv.
The Russian convoy ramped up its bombardment of the country’s second-largest city Kharkiv in the northeast and breaking through a heavily contested port city in the south.
Russian forces had faced stiff resistance from Ukraine’s military in the early part of the invasion last week, but officials have warned that a “second wave” of Russian forces could easily overcome the Ukrainian resistance.
Russia has a bigger and more powerful army than Ukraine’s in every sense, and at the same time Ukraine’s allies are scrambling to send more weapons into the country to help in its defense. The missile strikes on the second-largest city of Kharkiv that have left civilians dead and injured suggests that Russia is now expanding the scope of its bombing campaign from the earlier attacks that were more focused on military targets to more general targets.
The Ukrainian ambassador to the US after a meeting at the Capitol Hill requested for more weapons. US officials believe that Russia will next besiege Kyiv, which could lead to urban warfare, especially with Ukrainian civilians taking up arms to fight the Russian forces.
