Military Operation In Ukraine Was Timely Measure: Putin On Victory Day
Moscow, May 9: Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine was needed and a “timely” measure, said President Vladimir Putin on Victory Day.
BBC quoted the President as emphasising that it was the “right decision” of an independent, strong, sovereign country.
Beginning his Victory Day speech in Moscow’s Red Square on Monday, Putin told the Russian fighters that they were fighting for the security of Russia. He said, “Our duty is to do everything so that the horror of a global war does not happen again”.
The President termed NATO as an “obvious threat” to Russia. In an attempt to justify the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin leader said that NATO and Ukraine were creating threats “unacceptable to us” on Russia’s borders, BBC reported. He said that Moscow has “urged Europe to find a fair compromise, but they didn’t want to hear us.”
He further said, “In Kyiv they were saying they might get nuclear weapons and Nato started exploring the lands close to us and that became an obvious threat to our country and to our borders. Everything was telling us that there is a need to fight.”
At the end of his speech, the troops cheered and Russia’s national anthem was played whilst cannons fired.
Meanwhile, the air portion of the Victory Day parade in Moscow was canceled due to weather, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday. The Red Square air display was supposed to include the Z formation, which has been the motif of the military invasion of Ukraine. According to CNN, the ceremony was due to feature 77 aircraft flying over Moscow’s Red Square, commemorating the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union defeating Nazi Germany in World War II.
