SC Posts Road Rage Against Sidhu
New Delhi, Feb 3: The Supreme Court on Thursday posted for hearing on February 25, five days after the Punjab elections, a review petition filed against Punjab Congress President and former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu in a 1988 road rage case.
A two-judge Bench headed by Justice A. M. Khanwilkar and also comprising Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul deferred the hearing for February 25.
This followed a request from Sidhu’s counsel P. Chidambaram to adjourn the matter for three weeks. The court was hearing a petition filed by the victim’s family seeking a review of its May 15, 2018 verdict that let off Sidhu with a mere Rs. 1,000 fine in a 1988 road rage case in which a Patiala resident Gurnam Singh died.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had convicted Sidhu for voluntary causing hurt and sentenced him to three years in jail but the Supreme Court had let him off with a fine of Rs 1,000, saying the incident was more than 30 years old and there was no past enmity between the accused and victim and no weapon was used by accused.
