No Party Other Than Cong Reached Out To People During Pandemic : Jakhar
Chandigarh/Abohar, Feb 3: Former Punjab Congress President and party Campaign Committee chief for forthcoming assembly polls Sunil Jakhar on Thursday said no party other than Congress provided relief and succour to millions of people during the pandemic. Covid unleashed a sense of uncertainty and panic amongst people and the Congress leadership swung into action by reaching out to everyone who needed care to ensure no one slept hungry and remained unattended, he said.
Jakhar was chairing a meeting with the party cadre at his South Avenue residence here in view of the upcoming state polls, which he termed as critical for Punjab’s sustainable future. Punjab Congress helpline proved a boon for those severely impacted by the pandemic, he said adding the response of people to this much needed facility was overwhelming.
It was Punjab Government which also ensured that our migrant brothers and sisters reach back to their homes and are with their families safely by arranging special trains for them at its own cost. Slamming the central government for its “sheer apathy and callousness” towards migrants, the veteran Congress leader said BJP had even refused to bear travel expenses of people going to their homes to different states from Punjab. While other political parties remained limited to symbolism of lighting diyas and banging thalis, it was Congress cadre which took the lead in providing real help to those afflicted by virus, he added. He also praised role of social welfare organisations in this endeavour.
Jakhar slammed the hypocrisy of those political parties who are now promising the moon to the electorate, asking “Where were you when people needed you during Covid,” he asked. Those claiming to have given an efficient health system in Delhi vanished when people needed oxygen and perished. Patients from Delhi came to Punjab and availed treatment here, he added. He lauded the relentless work of Congress party workers and hoped for a similar response for people’s welfare in future as well.
