Mamata bats for Dada: The secret behind the new bonhomie between Mamata in Dada team

Mobilenews24x7 Bureau

It has become a persistent effort by the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Bannerjee to stand behind the veteran cricketer Saurav Ganguly ever since he has been ousted from the president ship  of the BCCI.

Ganguly has been denied an extension as understood and was visibly upset. After that, comes the chief minister Mamata Banerjee like a doting Didi to advocate for Dada(Saurav) requesting the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to intervene and reconsider his case as he is not only ‘pride of Bengal, but a national pride as well. He be given an extension or made the head of the International Cricket Council.

It is only the Prime Minister who can prevail upon and say BCCI to endorse Dada’s case. But what lies behind this cricket coated tale is may be something else and visible. It is an interesting mix of sports and politics.

It is still fresh in many’s memory that, once Saurav was prodded as a match to Mamata but the same was spurned by the cricketer and son the Dada case falling down the BJP’s priority list and Saurav losing the extension bonanza. Whereas, under the same norms, that no extension after three years, Jay Shah stayed put as the Secretary and treasurer of the BCCI.

.

It’s a classic case of dynasty privilege, or “parivarvaad”, said Derek O’ Brien, TMC parliamentary party leader in Rajya Sabha, speaking to me for this column. He said he echoed a poster he had shared on social media which was snarky about Shah and Arun Singh Dhumal, brother of Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.

Derek O’ Brien called Sourav Ganguly a cricket legend and said he has been unfairly treated by the BJP. Amit Shah, who has been the most senior BJP leader attacking the Trinamool, mainly on corruption charges,is now seeing retaliation from the Trinamool’s red-flagging of his son’s position in the BCCI.

The fact is Saurav has not fallen into the BJP’s lure as is evident from his refusal to say as told over violence against BJP workers in Bengal could be the second fly in the ointment.
