Sri Lanka’s Opposition Moves To Abolish 20th Amendment
Colombo, April 10: Sri Lanka’s main Opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentary group has decided to come up with a private members Bill to scrap the 20th amendment and remove the powers of executive presidency, local media reported on Sunday.
Speaking to media, Opposition leader Lakshman Kiriella said the group had decided to go ahead with the no confidence motion against the government and to muster the support of few Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs to get it approved, reports “Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa will meet MPs of other parties shortly to get their support,” Kiriella said.
“We are confident of numbers as we will try to muster the support of some SLPP MPs as well as those who have decided to become independent”, he added.
Member of Parliament Harshana Rajakaruna said a constitutional amendment will be brought in to scrap the powers of the President. Amid the dire economic and political crisis gripping the island nation, thousands of Sri Lankans on Saturday gathered in protest, near the President’s Office, demanding President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation.
