Veteran Odia actress Jharana Das passes away at 82

It is an irreparable loss and a void which can hardly be filled for times so far as quality cinema in Odia is concerned. On the demise of the Odia cine reigning queen of 60s Jharana Das, there is match to remembre in the annals of Odia cinema.

Das was an epitome who scaled the news highs of cinematic grandeur yet maintaining the purity and simplicity of the cultural roots Odisha was known for. For decades she ruled the screen giving some of the timeless films those were embedded in surreal and societal gravity of the state.

It is an unfortunate day for the Odia film industry as veteran actress Jharana Das passed away. She breathed her last at her residence in Chandni Road in Cuttack on late December 1 night. Jharana Das was 82 years old. Reports suggest that she was suffering from old age ailments and was not keeping well for quite some time now.

Naba Kisore Das, Minister, Health & Family Welfare, Government of Odisha, took to Twitter to mourn her death. His tweet read, “I am sad to learn the news of demise of popular Odia film & TV actress #JharanaDas. In the 1960s & 70s she had acted in many popular Odia films and carved a special place among the viewers.I pray her soul to rest in peace & also offer my sincere condolence to the bereaved family (sic).”

Secretary of Odisha Cine Artistes’ Association, Sritam Das remembered the actress and said, “I can remember her saying she started acting when there were restrictions for women to act in plays and films. Despite the hurdles, she took her career to a great height. Her demise is a big loss for us. Decision regarding her last rites will be taken after the arrival of her younger son. Her last rites will be conducted at Gorakabar in Cuttack,” reports Odisha TV.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also condoled Jharana Das’ demise and tweeted in Odia, which is loosely translated in English as, “I am deeply saddened and saddened by the passing away of Odisha’s famous cine actress Ishwar Das. His achievements and lively acting will always be remembered in the world of Odisha cinema. May the soul rest in peace and express our condolences to the bereaved family (sic).”

Jharana Das is known for her performances in hit films like Amadabata, Malajanha, Nari, Sri Jagannath, Adina Megha, Abhinetri and more. She had also acted in many plays, TV shows and serials.

The late actress started her acting career as a child artiste with All India Radio, Cuttack. She is also a trained Odissi dancer under Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Jharana also received the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award for lifetime achievement in 2016.
