Berhampur: At last Odisha has been able to wriggle out of a pre-medieval mind-set of marrying off girl children at an unacceptably minor age.
In a first of it’s kind the Ganjam district administration today declared itself as a child marriage-free district.
“After duly verified by the respective Block Development Officers, Tahasildars, Executive Officers, NAC and Child Marriage Prohibition officers which have been recommended by the GP/Ward/Village level Task Force Committees, the Administration Ganjam hereby declared Ganjam District as Child Marriage Free District (3309 number of Child Marriage free villages, 280 number of Child Marriage Free Ward under ULB and 503 number of Child Marriage Free Gram Panchayat)”, the administration said in an order.
“Today we declared Ganjam as Child Marriage free District. Team Ganjam worked hard to make Nirbhay Kadhi Program successful,” tweeted the official handle of Ganjam collector.
Notably, the district administration has been able to stop as many as 450 child marriages and video-record 48,383 marriages in two years — 2020 and 2021.
The administration also made production of Aadhaar card mandatory for any marriages to take place.
