Proving To Be An Example, Odisha’s Salma Begum Becomes First Transgender Lawyer Of The State
Keonjhar, Apr 2: Beating all odds, Salma Begum has become the first transgender in Odisha to work as a lawyer.
Begum is all set to practice as a lawyer at Barbil court in the Keonjhar district after getting registered at the Odisha Bar Council.
Born in Bhuyanroida, under the Joda block of Keonjhar, Salma was originally named Salim. It was in 2015 that Salim came in contact with a transgender group and embraced the identity of Salma.
After completing graduation, Salma got a law degree from Pravas Manjari Law College, Keonjhar, in 2021. After the Transgender Protection Act, of 2019 came into effect, Salma got an Aadhaar card.
It gave Salma confidence to study law with the hope to practice at Barbil court.
Some years back Salma had shot into the limelight after applying for the post of Sub-Inspector of Police. While the result is still awaited, Salma took up the law.
