Tenth anniversary of Nirbhaya, reminds the most horrific acts of rapists; yet such incidents get endemic

By D N Singh

Ten years have passed when the national capital, Delhi was left perplexed by a shocking incident of gang rape inside a moving bus. One does not know what has changed since. Besides the aloganeering and writings on the walls about women’s safety ‘beti bachao, beti padhao’ nothing visible on that issue.

Nirbhaya 10 years on: The lives the Delhi gang rape changed

The only reality which plays out today that the phrase Gang-rape have become irritatingly regular and does not raise more eyebrows. A kind of stereotyped usage in the media platforms.

Even during the recent campaigns, such issues rarely got space in the deliberations because those victims do not constitute the vote bank. Only glossing over the obvious is what are undelined in the political rabble rousings, calling each other names and scoring political browny points.

She was gang-raped brutally in December 2012 and was subjected to the most horrific atrocities by the rapists. The incident shook the conscience of the country which witnessed unprecedented protests that ultimately led to several legal reforms,” the DCW said in a letter addressed to the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman.

However, 10 years have passed since the gruesome incident and crimes against women and girls are only increasing in the country.

And believe it or not, every day , there are six rapes reported in the national capital itself. “An 8 month-old baby and a 90-year-old woman have also been raped in Delhi,” a letter from the DCE reads.

Has become an epidemic

The problem of increasing crimes against women and girls has reached an epidemic proportion and governments are failing to take concrete steps to counter it. Even the Nirbahya Fund that was set up for providing relief and rehabilitation for women and girls survivors of sexual assault has been reduced substantially. Governments have failed to create deterrence in the minds of people against crimes against women and girls.

Hardly any steps have been taken for strengthening and fixing accountability of police, forensic laboratories and trial courts. Even acid continues to be sold openly across the country in complete violation of the Supreme Court guidelines.

Lets look at the incident of Shraddha Walker, the live-in partner of Aftab Amin Poonawala, was killed and chopped into 35 pieces, yet the accused relishes in the jail, asking to read books and enjoying in his isolation even.

Whatelse the law demands to prove that Aftab is a killer of macabre psyche and deserves no intermissions in the jail.

But the parliamnet which is the house of our political guardians, hardly spares any time to brainstorm to formulate stringent recourses to create the require fear of laws. Whereas, every session ends in rukuses over other things.

Why not suspend a day or two’s business and allow a threadbare discussion on the issue which is no less significant than any.
