Odisha Legislative Council Issue: Speaker Writes Two Letters To Centre

Bhubaneswar, Feb 15: As stated earlier, Odisha Assembly Speaker Surya Narayan Patro has sent two letters to the Centre on the issue of setting up Legislative Council in the state.

Speaking to the media, here on Tuesday, Patro said he has written one letter to the Centre mentioning the detailed facts which were produced in the state government’s letter sent on September 18, 2018.

The second letter, sent to Union Law Minister, mentions submission of a resolution passed by the Assembly on establishment of the Legislative Council in the state.

Patro has also urged the Union Minister to launch an investigation to ascertain how the state letter sent in 2018 went missing.

It may be noted that Odisha Speaker had expressed his shock after Union Minister for Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju said in the Parliament that as per record, no resolution had been received to create Legislative Council in Odisha. Rijiju stated this while giving a written reply to a question from BJD MP Prasanna Acharya in the Rajya Sabha.

Patro had reiterated that the Assembly had passed a resolution on establishment of the Legislative Council in the state on September 18, 2018 and sent it to the Centre, requesting to pass a resolution on the matter.

The Assembly’s resolution was submitted to Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and secretary, ministries of Parliamentary Affairs and Law, he added.
