Balasore, Sep 15: Former Congress MLA and veteran political leader Gopnarayan Das passed away on Thursday morning following cardiac arrest.
Family sources said Das complained of sickness on Wednesday night while he was in his residence at Gopalgaon in the Town.
He was initially admitted in the district headquarter hospital but suffered a major cardiac arrest near Bhandaripokhari under Bhadrak district on the way to Bhubaneswar for treatment.
Das, a Congress leader, was associated with various social,cultural organizations besides trade unions and philanthropic organizations.
People from various walks of life including elected representatives visited his residence to pay
tribute to the departed soul.
He was elected from Balasore Sadar Assembly seat in 1985 and prior to that served as Sadar block chairman and municipality councillor .
During his period as a legislator industrialization including establishment of Birla tyres occurred in
the district.
