New Delhi, March 15 : The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it will hear on Wednesday a petition challenging the bail granted to Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra, in a case related to Lakhimpur Kheri violence that led to death of eight people, including four farmers. The hearing, which was initially scheduled for today, was adjourned, as Justice Surya Kant, one of the judges of the Bench hearing the petition filed by the farmers’ families, was not present. “We will hear the matter tomorrow,” said Chief Justice NV Ramana. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing on behalf of the victims family members, told the Supreme Court that the main witness was allegedly “brutally” attacked and threatened that he would be taken care of, as the Bharatiya Janata Party has won the recently-concluded Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.
The family members of the deceased farmers, who were allegedly mowed down by a car belonging to Ajay Mishra Teni’s son, Ashish Mishra in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3 last year, knocked the doors of the Supreme Court on February 21, challenging the bail granted by the Allahabad High Court to Ashish. The plea was filed through lawyer Prashant Bhushan. The petition said that the family members have been forced to approach the top court of the country, since the State of Uttar Pradesh has failed to file the appeal against the Allahabad High Court order granting bail to Ashish Mishra.
