Novak Djokovic Detained Ahead Of Deportation Appeal

Canberra, Jan 15: Australian immigration authorities detained tennis star Novak Djokovic ahead of a court hearing on Sunday to determine whether he can stay in the country unvaccinated or will be deported, BBC reported on Saturday.

The 34-year-old Serbian faces deportation after his visa was cancelled for a second time on Friday, after the Australian government labelled him a threat to the public.

As of now Djokovic is still scheduled to play in the Australian Open on Monday. His lawyers have appealed against what they called an “irrational” judgement.

His next hearing is due on Sunday, at 09:30 local time. If he loses the appeal, then Djokovic faces deportation and a three-year visa ban.

If he is allowed to stay and were to win the tournament for a tenth time, he will become the most successful men’s tennis player in the history of the sport.
