Meerut, Jan 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of a Sports University to be set up in the name of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand in Meerut on Sunday.
The university will come up at Salaawaa village in Sardhana tehsil here some 32 km from the district headquarters. Preparations have started at administrative and police level after the PM program finalised.
The sports university will be constructed using the architecture of Somnath Temple. According to reports the consultant preparing the design of the university has been asked to give the shape of Somnath temple. A statue of major Dhyan Chand, playing hockey, will be installed at the entrance of the university. Besides, the architecture of the administrative block, library and stadium has also been designed on the lines of the Somnath temple. Few other buildings will be decorated with artifacts of hockey, football and shooting.
As the university will come up near Gang canal, efforts will be made to improve the green cover in the area. It may be mentioned that the Uttar Pradesh government announced to set up the Sports University in Meerut, famous for its sports products, in January this year. In August Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced to name the university after hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand.
