PM Modi Bows Down To This 125-Year-Old Yoga Guru, Who Is Padma Shri Awardee Swami Sivananda?
New Delhi, Mar 22: Swami Sivananda, a 125-year-old yoga guru, received the Padma Shri award in Delhi. Before collecting the prestigious award, the yoga guru from Uttar Pradesh approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
PM Modi was seated among the audience in the first row. The guru bowed in obeisance. Consequently, PM Modi also bowed down in front of him twice.
As the yoga guru continued his walk to the podium where President Ram Nath Kovind was seated, he bowed twice more. The yoga guru bowed down in front of the President.
The president handed him his Padma Shri award, the fourth-highest civilian award of India, on Monday. He received the award for his contribution to the field of Yoga. He was dressed in a traditional white kurta and dhoti. He received a round of applause from the guest at the civil investiture ceremony for his humble gesture. While presenting the award, the President was seen talking to the yoga guru. The two also posed for a picture.
Swami Sivananda, known as Yog Sevak, won the heart of social media users. Many users on social media praised his gesture. Industrialist Anand Mahindra tweeted, “The power of yoga. A life spanning 125 years of dedication! The grace and dignity of Swami Sivananda is both humbling & inspiring. Proud to belong to the country of Yoga’s origin.” Another user wrote on Twitter, “Remarkable thing is at 125 years of age he still walks up right without anyone’s support. This is real power yoga.”

Swami Sivananda was born on 8 August 1896 in Sylhet district (now in Bangladesh) of undivided India.
Padma Awards are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. `Padma Shri` is awarded for distinguished service in any field. The Padma Awards are conferred by the President of India, at ceremonial functions, which are held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
