PIL Seeks Postponement Of Assembly Elections In Five States, Including In UP
New Delhi, Jan 27 (UNI) Congress leader Jagdish Sharma has filed a Public Interest Litigation before the Delhi High Court, seeking its direction for postponement of the upcoming Assembly elections in five states, in view of the rising wave of Omicron variant of Covid-19.
Sharma had filed the PIL before the Delhi High Court, through his lawyers, Rudra Vikram Singh and Manish Kumar. It is to be noted that the assembly elections in the States of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Goa are scheduled to start from next month and will continue till March.
Sharma sought a direction to the Election Commission (EC) to defer the elections for a few months, while also seeking a mandatory quarantine of people returning from poll-bound states. The petition of Sharma also prayed to the Supreme Court that a direction be issued to the Central government and the Delhi government to submit details of their plans, as to how they will deal with the shortage of Oxygen and distribute essential supplies and services during the third wave of the pandemic.
