Order On Swamy’s Plea Challenging Air India Sale On Jan 6
New Delhi, Jan 4: The Delhi High Court on Thursday will pronounce its order on a plea moved by senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy challenging bidding process to sell national carrier Air India to the Tata Group.
Swamy has sought to cancel the deal to sell Air India to Tata Group claiming the bidding process was rigged in favour of the salt-to-software business conglomerate.
“It was a very interesting session in Delhi High Court today with SG Tushar Mehta and Tata advocate Harish Salve. The CJ asked sharp penetrating questions. I was fortunate to have Satya Sabharwal do the deep research that helped me counter every question. Judgment on 6th,” Swamy tweeted on Tuesday after hearing of the case.
In October last year, the government had accepted Tata’s bid to acquire Air India, its low-cost arm Air India Express and ground-handling joint venture AISATS for Rs. 18,000 crore.
The government has signed share purchase agreement (SPA) with Tata Group and is in the process of transferring the ownership to the private company.
Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Mehta contended that Air India disinvestment was a policy decision taken by the government in the wake of huge losses being incurred by the carrier.
