New Delhi, Jan 8: The Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) registration of the Missionaries of Charity was restored on Saturday. Its name reappeared on the list of organisations with valid certification to receive foreign funding.
The Home Ministry had earlier said the renewal application under FCRA for the Missionaries of Charity was refused due to adverse inputs.
Missionaries of Charity is registered under FCRA. Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien tweeted on the latest development: “The power of love.”
“FCRA registration for Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity is back. The ‘adverse inputs’ harassed so many and then disappeared in two weeks. The POWER OF LOVE is stronger than the power of 56 inch,” he said.
The Missionaries of Charity provides food, shelter and medical treatment free of cost to a large number of homeless, orphans and leprosy patients at its various homes in and around Kolkata.
Over 5,900 organizations were taken off the FCRA list by the Home Ministry on January 1.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha in February 2021, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said between 2016 to 2020, FCRA registration certificates of more than 6600 NGOs and associations were cancelled.
