New Delhi, April 25: The Lok Sabha Secretariat has sought a report from Maharashtra government over allegations made by Lok Sabha MP Navneet Rana of mistreatment by police, sources said.
Rana, who is Lok Sabha MP from Amravati in Maharashtra, was arrested along with her husband MLA Ravi Rana on Saturday on an FIR under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with assault or use of criminal force against a public servant in the execution of his duty.
On Sunday, they were sent to judicial custody for 14 days by a Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Bandra. The couple had threatened to chant Hanuman Chalisa outside Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s residence Matoshree, but called it off later.
Shiv Sena workers had also staged a protest outside their residence, and the lawmaker couple was arrested later. In a letter written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday, Rana alleged she was denied drinking water, and was not allowed to go to the bathroom. She also alleged that casteist slurs were used against her.
Sources said the Lok Sabha Secretariat has asked the state government to respond to the charge. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh are presently out of the country on a tour to South East Asia. The Pune unit of Shiv Sena on Monday filed a complaint against Independent MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana at Vishrantwadi police station, alleging that the couple had gone to Mumbai a few days back with the intention to create communal violence in the state.
In the complaint that was marked to the City Police Commissioner, Sena deputy city chief Anand Ramnivas Goyal stated that the couple also used foul language against Shiv Sena president and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and tried to destabilise the law and order in the state.
