New Delhi, May 18: Congress General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court verdict to free the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassin and said we are “deeply saddened” by the decision.
“If this way those guilty of terrorism and assassination are going to be released then who will uphold the majestic and integrity of the law in this country” Surjewala said while, he was holding a press conference here.
“People are unhappy with SC relief to Ravji Gandhi’s assassin. It is a particular blow to those who are fighting against terrorism” he added.
Launching a scathing attack on the Prime Minister, he said, “PM Modi and his government need to answer today, why is this your duplicity and double standards on terrorism.” “Are you going to complicit in the release of terrorists and murderers of former Prime Minister of India” he added.
Congress reaction came hours after the Apex court on Wednesday ordered release of AG Perarivalan, one of the convicts who were serving life for his involvement in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination that took place on May 21, 1991.
Perarivalan was initially handed a death sentence, but later it was commuted to life imprisonment. The verdict also will pave the way for the release of other six convicts in the cases including Nalini Sriharan.
