Center Mandate: Keep Safe Records Of International Calls & Msgs For 2 Years

New Delhi, Jan 31: The government has also protected calls, satellite phone calls, conference calls and messages made from abroad through the Internet as well as through normal telecommunication networks for at least two years. In a circular issued by the Department of Telecommunications, an order has been issued for telecom service providers to make international calls and messages mandatory.

The Department of telecom(DoT) has taken this step after the amendment made in the Unified License in December last, which made it mandatory to keep internet details apart from call data records for two years.

Earlier this provision was applicable only for one year. The unified license holder companies are Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Jio, BSNL. They provide all types of telecommunication services to their customers except satellite phone services.

According to this circular issued by the department last Friday, the licensee companies will have to store call data records, IP records and all commercial records for at least two years so that the government can check them for security reasons. Companies can destroy this figure after the completion of the two-year period, unless a specific direction has been given.

Changes to the Unified License provisions will also apply to Tata Communications, Cisco Webex, AT&T Global Networks that have purchased these licenses.
