In 1988, Navjyot Singh Sidhu and his accomplice got into an argument with Gurnam Singh, a 65-year-old senior citizen, over the issue of car parking in Patiala. The dispute escalated into a brawl. Gurnam Singh was severely injured in the beating. He died during treatment. Gurnam’s family had approached the court in this regard. Sidhu was acquitted by a sessions court in 1999 for lack of evidence. However, the High Court had in 2006 sentenced Sidhu to three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs one lakh.
Following this, the Supreme Court had in 2018 imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 and released Sidhu. However, Justice. A. M. Khanwilkar and Justice. S. K. Kaul’s bench had accepted the petition seeking reconsideration of the case. The Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced former cricketer and Congress leader Navjyot Singh Sidhu to one year rigorous imprisonment.
