Pak Army Chief Hails Nawaz: Shehbaz Sharif

Islamabad, March 23: Amid Imran Khan treading on slippery grounds ahead of a crucial trust vote, Pakistani leader Shehbaz Sharif has claimed that Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has praised Khan’s predecessor Nawaz Sharif, saying the former prime minister always “respected him and responded positively to the military’s requirements”.

“The incumbent chief of army staff in our several gatherings, including (that) on FATF, categorically said (former) prime minister Nawaz Sharif has always respected me,” Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) president told the media on Tuesday. Leader of Opposition in Pakistan Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif’s statement has come amid alleged poaching of ket PTI allies in the government that could destabilise the Imran Khan government on Friday.

According to Shehbaz, General Bajwa praised Sharif before dozens of leaders of political parties, however, he did not mention when the meeting took place, The Express Tribune reported. Political tension has reached its heights in the country as the opposition brings in the no-confidence motion against Khan.

“Whenever I (Army chief) asked for any work related to armed forces; or sought any funds; he (Nawaz Sharif) never refused me,” he added. He was addressing a press conference after London-based assets recovery firm Broadsheet’s CEO Kaveh Moussavi said no evidence was found against Nawaz Sharif and his family members in corruption case. Erstwhile Prime Minister General Pervez Musharraf had hired the firm to probe political opponents, including the Sharifs, for alleged wrongdoings.
