Unclear If War In Ukraine Imminent : Baerbock
Berlin, Feb 19: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Saturday that it is unclear whether an alleged Russian attack on Ukraine is imminent, while calling the threat “very real.” On the sidelines of the Munich security conference, an emergency meeting of G7 foreign ministers has been held to discuss mounting tensions around Ukraine amid recent escalation in the breakaway Donbas. “We do not know whether an attack is a done deal. However, we believe that a threat to Ukraine is very real indeed,” Baerbock said at a briefing after the meeting. Baerbock also noted that there is still the room for dialogue and peaceful solution to the crisis.
“The situation is very serious indeed, however, the history has not yet been written, and we still see an easy way out. And it is for the Russian government to seek this way out,” she said. Baerbock added that the threat emanating from the fears of Russian aggression has already brought about the real consequences for the Ukrainian economy “with regard to investments in the country, air traffic, jobs, and the lives of people.”
