Subramanian Swamy’s Suggestion That India Send Troops To Sri Lanka Causes Uproar On Social Media
Colombo/New Delhi, May 11: Senior Indian politician Subramanian Swamy has caused an uproar on social media in Sri Lanka with his suggestion that India must “send in the Indian Army to restore Constitutional sanity” in Sri Lanka.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy had Tweeted on Tuesday, “India must send in the Indian Army to restore Constitutional sanity. At present anti-Indian foreign forces are taking advantage of people’s anger. This affects India’s national security.” “Yes in Sri Lanka,” he posted later, when asked where he meant the troops to be sent.
Known to be a close ally of the Rajapaksa family, Swamy’s post earned a backlash from Sri Lankan netizens. One Sri Lankan twitterati posted: “As a Sri Lankan, I can assure that there are no anti-Indian foreign forces involved. There is no threat to India’s national security. In fact, this crisis has nothing to do with foreign countries. We do not need foreign forces meddling in our business.”
Another wrote: “Hay Swamy, I can understand your pain when your family friend Rajapaksha’s Dynasty is falling down. We Sri Lankans will take care this. You mind your own business.”
“Don’t worry …No one Take swami Seriously..,” wrote another.
“Being a Sri Lankan and a protester against the corrupted ruling party of the country, I strongly insist this is not a anti-indian protest. Don’t spread this kind of things for your benefit. And Sri Lanka is an independent country and we are having our own Army.”
An Indian tweeter, tried to reassure, with: “Fellow Sri Lankan brothers and sisters…..this fellow has no importance here in India….. ignore him……just make Sri Lanka great again….. Indian’s will be more than happy.”
Another Sri Lankan wrote: “There is every reason to believe that the Government of India – that has stood by Sri Lanka in her hour of need – has a sound appraisal of its national security interests which are not driven by intemperate sentiments, baseless claims and illogical jingoism of certain parties.”
In reply to the Indian High Commission’s posts on not sending the Indian army or of flying some high profile politician to India, the Sri Lankans posted: “People fretting out due to @Swamy39’s statement, have to understand he is not in govt. He is playing his own political game.”
“How do Sri Lankans trust your statement when it is compared with your Swami’s statement????” “First ask @Swamy39 to not to poke his nose in the internal matter of Sri Lanka.”
Political violence in Sri Lanka was unleashed on Monday when Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters of Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked peaceful anti-government protesters in Colombo causing widespread unrest across the country.
Even though Mahinda Rajapaksa tendered his resignation from the post of Prime Minister following the incident, it triggered unrest among the public, causing them to lash out at SLPP politicians, the Police, and those linked to the government.
