Sri Lankan Opposition Calls To Impeach President Rajapaksa
Colombo, April 9: Amid the worst economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the National People’s Power (NPP) MP Vijitha Herath called upon to impeach President Gotabaya Rajapaksa if he does not quit on his own and a no-confidence motion be brought against the incumbent government, Khaleej Times reported on Saturday.
Herath said that the Parliament should first address the political crisis in the country in order to deal with the economic challenges being faced by the people. He said that he and his party are ready to move both the impeachment and the no-confidence motion against President Rajapaksa, calling upon the people in general to put pressure upon the president to resign. Herath insisted that it is time that a new leader took charge in order to find a solution to the prevailing crisis in the country.
President Rajapaksa on April 4 named at least four ministers to maintain the legitimacy of the government until a full Cabinet was appointed after his entire cabinet resigned earlier, also calling upon opposition members to join a unity government to deal with the economic crisis, but has steadfastly refused to resign.
