‘Horrific’, ‘heartbroken’: Key reactions to US Supreme Court decision on abortion
Washington, June 25 : Public figures across countries reacted to the US Supreme Court ruling on Friday overturning Roe v. Wade, a landmark decision that established a constitutional right to abortion in the nation nearly 50 years ago.
Former US President Barack Obama called the decision as an attack on essential freedoms of millions of Americans.
“Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans” he tweeted.
Canadian President Justin Trudeau called the news about the decision as “horrific”.
“The news coming out of the United States is horrific. My heart goes out to the millions of American women who are now set to lose their legal right to an abortion. I can’t imagine the fear and anger you are feeling right now,” Trudeau wrote on Twitter.
“No government, politician, or man should tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her body. I want women in Canada to know that we will always stand up for your right to choose,” he added.
“Abortion is a fundamental right for all women,” French President Emmanuel Macron. It must be protected. I wish to express my solidarity with the women whose liberties are being undermined by the Supreme Court of the United States, he added.
