Report sought on transgender who jumped to death from Jagannath temple Kendrapara (Odisha)
Kendrapara (Odisha), Sep 16 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday sought a further status report and qua compensation within six weeks from the Puri District collector on a transgender who jumped to death from Sri Jagannath temple on May 1.
The NHRC passed the order after human rights defender Radhakanta Tripathy highlighted the issue concerning transgenders who are being deprived of benefits of many social welfare schemes of the state.
Transgender Balaram Rout (aged 36 years), of Nimapara jumped from the Gumuta of the famous Puri shrine.
Tripathy alleged that the victim succumbed to his injuries after falling from a height of 30 feet
It was alleged that the fatal incident happened on account of failure and negligence of police and inaction on the part of the Social Justice Department and Temple Administration which amounts to a serious violation of human rights.
The Commission directed its Registry to transmit the copy of the complaint to the concerned authority calling for an action taken report within four weeks over the issue.
The authorities concerned have been asked to intimate the Commission, if any notice, order has been received by him/them in the instant matter from the State Human Rights Commission.
The NHRC in its directive stated that further current status reports as also the inquest proceedings should be called from the Puri District Magistrate and Puri Superintendent of Police within four weeks. UNI XC
