Clash Between Two Factions At Temple Trees
Colombo, July 12: Sri Lanka police said that at least 10 people, including one woman, were hospitalised during a clash between two protesting factions within Prime Minister’s Residence Temple Trees, on Tuesday.
The clash had broken out in the early hours between supporters of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and a group of protesters, sources said.
According to Colombo Page, the injured have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
Kollupitiya Police have started a probe into the incident, police sources said.
The Temple Trees and the Presidential Palace had been occupied by the protesters since July 9. They said the residence of both leaders will be vacated only after the resignation by Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickremesinghe.
While the President is expected to step down on Wednesday, the Prime Minister on Saturday announced his resignation.
The storming of the official houses came after months of protests by people who were angered by the South Asian island nation’s crippling economic crisis and the Rajapaksa clan’s incompetence and corruption.
