Heart Travels 350 Kms To Save Kashmiri Woman’s Life
Chennai, Feb 2: Doctors at the MGM Healthcare Hospital gave a new lease of life to a 33-year-old underprivileged woman from Kashmir by successfully performing a heart transplant surgery. The transplanted heart was transported from Trichy, covering a distance of 350 kms, to Chennai by creating a green corridor. The unmarried Kashmiri woman, Ms Shahzadi Fathima, who was suffering for ten years from Restrictive Cardio Myopathy (RCM), a condition where the chambers of the heart become stiff over time was identified by Aishwarya Trust, which funded her transplant treatment costs.
She was on medical management with worsening heart failure symptoms and required early heart transplantation. She has registered herself with the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu. With her condition worsening, on December 31, 2021, she was admitted with signs of severe heart failure and doctors treated her with intropes and other medications. On January 26 this year, a brain-dead donor was available from Star Kims, Trichy. The heart was transported to Chennai through a green corridor and a high-risk heart transplantation was performed on Ms Shahzadi.
Post surgery, she was shifted to Transplant ICU in a stable condition. She was removed from the ventilator. At present she is Transplant ICU recovering from the surgery, according to a hospital release today. Aishwarya Trust Founder Ms Chitra Viswanathan said Shahzadi Fatima lives with her brother who is a daily wage earner and was not able to meet her medical expenses and the transplant costs. On hearing about the plight of the Kashmiri woman, the Trust decided to support the entire cost of the transplant at MGM Healthcare. It was a meaningful way for Aishwarya Trust to celebrate the Republic Day by funding the lady’s heart transplant on 26th January, 2022”,
