Records have it that when the English, in 1930s, drove their cars on the Indian streets, bus and tram conductors in Kolkata would say louddly that, ‘pleasure car’ and then evrything moving on would come to a stand-still.
And, even those times, there were some Zebra pulled passenger carts on the streets. It is said that Zebras were known then for being the annoying animals, often disobeying the orders of the cart driver unlike horses. Horses are very obeying and in service to this date. Be it professionally or for decorative ceremonies.
Perhaps, the first one to revolt against the English was a zebra which disobeyed the commands. As past records show, that was the reason why the English banned the Zebra pulled carts and, instead, went on with only the horses. It was out of fear and embarassment that even the English commuters stoped out of fear and gave way to Zebra carts.
After zebra carts were banned, something remained back. That was the black and white strips.
Which were put on the roads and called as Zebra Crossings to halt the traffic and give way to pdestrians on the roads.
That was a powerful etymology for the phrase Black & While.
