From demonetization to Morbi, a morbid track that reflects the faces of our rulers

By D N Singh

It was six years ago the NDA government head Narendra Modi had announced the surprise demonetization of about 90% cash in the country just giving two hours notice.

Simultaneously, the PM made an assurance that, demonetization is going to be a major tool to unearth black money and arrest terrorism from the country.

However, both the rots have been in continuation and the dirty legacy of the terror elements is going nearly double than what was eight years ago.

Interestingly, in India today, people now carry nearly 75 % more cash than in 2016.

And about the trails of corruption, less said the better. The general perception is disturbing.

Today, India’s rank in 2016 corruption ( undefined) was 79 whereas, the same has attained a climb to 85, a dreary upward move in just six years.

Regarding the arrest of terrorism the promises seem wandering  through the darkness of fear.

For example, in Kashmir, in 2014 the deaths due to terrorism were 91 and in 2021 the toll has shot up to 153.

Regarding other issues such as prices of fuel it requires hardly any mention.

Inflation in other commodities have scaled up and such an important topic failed to be debated in the last Lok Sabha session and was drowned in the din of uproars.

Not a word of regrets neither from the treasury bench nor from the opposition. Only the trading of charges were there.

Morbi a catastrophe ignored

Several unpleasant questions still remain unanswered. Only a few foot soldiers were blemished. Rest no responsibility fixed from top to bottom. Yes, the Morbi sitting MLA has been denied a ticket for the coming Assembly polls. That is all about how the political executives and administrators have been freed from the eyes of the law.

Whereas, the prime minister was, during his visit to Morbi, was usher in to a freshly sanitized hospital for  obvious reasons.

In sharp contrast, the debris of the broken bridge still keeps to mirror the faces of the Indian officialdom. A shocking reminder of people who rule over us without a shred of compassion, let alone guilt.

Each parent who lost their children shall be tormented by their painful deaths. But it would not touch the skins of politicians anything like feeling of remorse. Everything for them now to win another election in Gujarat.
