Shimla Freezes At Minus 2

Shimla, Feb 5: One feet of snow has accumulated in the Himachal capital taking the mercury down to minus 2 degrees Celsius, the season’s coldest. Heavy snowfall continues in Shimla and Dharamshala. The snow over the past few days have brought all surface transport to a near standstill. The MeT Department said Shimla received 32.6 cm of snow since Friday. A thick blanket of snow covered roofs, roads, pavement and trees presenting a white Shimla to the tourists flocking for that perfect view.

The maximum temperature was 1.2 degrees Celsius while the minimum was of minus 2.1 degrees. Power supply, telecommunication and rail services were affected while most activities came to a complete halt. Apart from Shimla, Narkanda and Kufri are also cut off. The Hindustan Tibet National Highway-5 and Shimla-Kangra National Highway-88 are covered in snow. The Public Works Department, Shimla Municipal Corporation, State Electricity Board and police are working on a war-footing to restore the public services and clear the snow.
