South Scares: Rohit Shetty jumps in on North-South debate, says Bollywood will never die
Mumbai, May 29 : Rohit Shetty is one of the biggest names in Bollywood today and is known for common tropes in his films such as outlandish physics-defying action, good comedy, a spicy script etc.
The director recently shared his sentiment over the popularity of South films in India like “RRR”, “Pushpa” and “KGF Chapter 2” and the major decline in box office that Bollywood is facing in comparison to its Southern counterparts.
Speaking at a promotional event along with Ranveer Singh in Mumbai, the blockbuster Bollywood director commenting on the North-South cinema debate, said that Bollywood will never come to an end.
He stated “The trend of ‘Bollywood khatam’ (Bollywood over) will never happen. In the 80s, when VCRs came to the forefront, people said that theatre will go out of business, and Bollywood is finished. Then recently with the boom of OTT, many people said that Bollywood is finished. So, such a topic does get high, but Bollywood kabhi khatam nahi hoga (Bollywood will never get over).”
The director also said that there is no unhealthy sort of competition of rivalry between the North and South, saying that South Indian films have been remade in Hindi since the 1960s.
“When you’ll check the history, you will learn that south is there since the 60s and 50s. Shashi Kapoor’s Pyaar Kiye Jaa was remake of a south film. In the 80s, when Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna were at their peak, a new boy entered into cinema world, Kamal Haasan sir with Ek Duje Ke Liye, and it was a hit,” the filmmaker said.
Currently on the work front, the action-comedy director is working on upcoming titles such as the film “Cirkus” and the series “Indian Police Force” set within his new Cop Universe comprising of films such as “Singham” “Simmba” and “Sooryavanshi”.
