Canada Honors Khaleda Zia As ‘Mother Democracy’

Dhaka, Feb 9  The Canadian Human Rights International Organization (CHRIO) has honored Bangladesh Nationalist Party(BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia with ‘Mother Democracy’ for her contribution to democracy. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir presented the credentials and certificates to the journalists at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
“We are delighted to announce that the Canadian Human Rights International Organization (CHRIO) has made a significant contribution to the cause of democracy in the country, and that Begum Khaleda Zia is still under house arrest in critical condition,” he said. “For all these reasons, this organization has given the Mother of Democracy Award to the country’s leader. The Canadian High Commission has also endorsed it here.” After being treated at Bashundhara Hospital for 81 days, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is at her home in Gulshan on February 1. On February 8, 2018, in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was sent to Dhaka Central Jail.
After two years of imprisonment, she was released on condition on March 25, 2020 at the request of the family. Since then she has been at her home in Gulshan. The press conference was held at the chairperson’s office in Gulshan. The decisions of the party’s national standing committee meeting chaired by the party’s acting chairman Tareq Rahman were presented at the press conference on Monday. BNP standing committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku were present at the press conference.
