BO Estimates Indicate ‘Gangubai..’ Off To Good Start
Mumbai, Feb 26 : Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Alia Bhatt starrer “Gangubai Kathiawadi” got a good start, earning Rs10.50 crore on the first day at the box office. Released Friday in theatres, the movie has been subject to mixed reviews so far with general praise directed at the film’s cinematography, its ambitious direction and music but has also received criticism for its length, story, screenplay and SLB using unconventional methods to try and glorify the underworld madame.
The biopic is based on the life the woman mafia don and brothel owner Gangubai Harjivandas aka Gangubai Kathiawadi adapted from Hussain Zaidi’s book “The Mafia Queens of Mumbai”. A point of great contention between Bollywood and netizens has been Alia Bhatt’s performance which is being hailed as both the best of her career, as well as just badly miscast with many saying that the actress simply lacks the punch to portray such a rough and cut around the edges character. The movie is estimated to garner in the range Rs 25-30 crore at the box office by the weekend
