‘Badhaai Do’ Meant To Be Watched With Family: Rajkummar On TV premiere
New Delhi, May 25: They say, marriages are made in heaven, but this doesn’t come without a slice of compromise, some “atrangi” situations, families’ “ki pyaar bhari nok jhok”, and lots of ‘badhaai”.
Bringing all this and more, Zee Cinema is all set to present an out and out ode to love with the World Television Premiere of ‘Badhaai Do’ on Saturday at 2.30 pm.
Etched in the background of quintessential Bharat, the film boasts of quirky characters, replete with local lingo and earthy humour that is laced with family members continually interested in everyone’s private affairs — be it love or marriage, ‘Badhaai Do’ has a flavour of it all.
Phenomenal performances by Rajkummar Rao as Shardul and Bhumi Pednekar as the feisty Sumi bring this light-hearted family drama to life which is a perfect mix of humour and emotions.
The perfect companion to this is the music by Amit Trivedi and Tanishk Bagchi, adding to this entertainment wagon presented as a heartfelt family drama.
Shardul and Sumi are an unconventional couple who constantly present highly relatable situations of an Indian family trying to match the societal expectations of an ideal marriage timeline.
From being the victims of ‘Ab Shaadi ki Umar Hogayi Hai,’ and ‘Ab Good News Kab Sunaoge,’ to keeping up with everyone’s expectations of a wedding they weren’t ready for to then having to survive the marriage – this couple will have you ask the right questions by the end of it.
While dealing with the very many qualms of their conservative families, director Harshavardhan Kulkarni has cleverly embedded rib-tickling elements to tell the story of the tom-boyish PT teacher and a sensitive police officer.
Talking about the film, Rajkummar Rao said, “As a country, we love watching films with great company and ‘Badhaai Do’ is meant to be watched together with the family, which makes the TV release even more special.
“For me, love is above all, be it love for family, friends, or partner. I chose to do ‘Badhaai Do’ because it celebrated love and all its relationships in all its glory. The film talks about choices and the journey of the characters making those choices with a backdrop of shaadi, love, and acceptance. All in all, what I can say is, shaadi ka laddoo is not always meetha, it could also be sour, namkeen or even kadva!”
Bhumi said: “When I first heard the narration of the Badhaai Do script, I was convinced I wanted to take up the project. The film has a feel-good factor because of the everyday family dynamics showcased in the film and that really binds the story to its very root.
“I know that the cinema I want to do has to be wholesome and relatable; given Sumi’s character, I found everything that I was looking for. She is fierce with her choices and not easily bogged down by others’ expectations, she is truly the representation of today’s girl. And with the humorous approach of the film, Badhaai Do is an absolute family entertainer which has some resonating points for everyone.”
‘Badhaai Do’ revolves around the lives of Shardul and Suman who enter a marriage of convenience to get their families off their backs and live a life they have always wanted. This in turn gives rise to many difficult situations as the couple soon finds themselves struggling to juggle between unrealistic expectations, intruding families and their own little secret which forms the rest of the story.
