Yechury slams BJP govt for obstructing Oppn leaders from meeting family members of Lakhimpur Kheri incident
New Delhi : Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Monday slammed the ruling BJP government in UP on ‘high-handedness’ by the state
police against leaders of Opposition parties by not allowing them to meet the victims family members of Lakhimpur Kheri incident and termed it ”draconian throttling of democracy.”
In a series of tweets, the CPI (M) “The BJP and Modi government have no business to not allow political parties to reach victims of the barbarism inflicted on farmers yesterday.
Strongly condemn this draconian throttling of democracy.”
Yechury’s statement comes following reports of leaders from various parties, including Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, being stopped from visiting Lakhimpur Kheri.
Gandhi was detained at Sitapur early on Monday morning along with Congress MP Deepender Hooda on their way to Lakhimpur Kheri.
The CPI (M) leader further said the sacrifice of the farmers will not go in vain.
“The sacrifice of our brave and determined farmers will not be allowed to go in vain. Our respects to those who have paid with their lives,” Yechury said in another tweet.
On Sunday, eight people including four farmers were crushed to death and several others were injured by a convoy of three SUVs, one allegedly being driven by Ashish, son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni.
