Trinamool gives a miss to Opposition rally
New Delhi : All India Trinamool Congress on Thursday gave a miss to Opposition rally here against Pegasus snooping controversy, alleged manhandling on Members of Parliament in Rajya Sabha, farm laws, and other issues, saying its position is a little different from other Opposition parties as it is running the government alone in West Bengal.
“Our position is a little different from other political parties. We fought and won Bengal alone, and we are running the govt alone,” TMC MP Sougata Roy said.
Mr Roy clarified that it does not mean that his party has sided ways with the Opposition or wants to remain aloof but “there is a way to go about it”.
“There is no doubt on Opposition unity. Trinamool is with opposition but there is a way to do it,” the TMC MP added.
Interestingly, Trinamool Congress chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently met Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi.
She had also written a letter to Opposition parties to unite in the fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party.
During the just-concluded monsoon session, the TMC remained glued with the Opposition in demanding discussion over several issues.
Several Opposition leaders including Congress former president Rahul Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party head Sharad Pawar, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and Rashtriya Janata Dal Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha took out a rally from Parliament House to Vijya Chowk.
The leaders alleged that the government was trying to mute the Opposition’s voice on issues including snooping, farm laws, price rise, alleged manhandling of MPs.
“As far as 60 percent of the country is concerned, there was no Parliament session as the voice of 70 per cent of people was crushed, humiliated,” Mr Gandhi told mediapersons.
“This is nothing short of murder of democracy,” he added.
The Opposition, unitedly, from the beginning of the monsoon session vociferously protested in both Houses of Parliament in demand for discussion of Pegasus snooping controversy and farm laws.
However, the government did not pay any heed to their demand. Many bills were passed amid the din and without any discussion.
